Why this change?
Following the implementation of the EU directive in October 2014, fuels are represented by geometric figures with a letter and a number.
The pictograms have been the same in all petrol stations in the European Union since 12 October 2018.
Petrol becomes E5, E10 and E85, explanation:
The label is round, and green in colour. Inside there is an “E” to designate the name of the fuel and a number which
indicates the biofuel content.
What about diesel?
The most consumed fuel in France, diesel also adopts new codes:
“B” for Biodiesel, followed by a number which indicates the proportion of biofuel; B10, meanwhile corresponds to Diesel Extreme Cold. The new signage
integrates the “XTL”, for future synthetic diesel fuels.
The means
- To avoid confusion, vehicles sold in Europe after 12 October display the appropriate fuel label affixed to the hatch of their fuel tanks.
- European standardisation of fuels is intended not only to simplify identification for consumers but also to highlight the proportion of biofuel
in their composition.
The stated objective of the EU: supporting the deployment of a continuous network of infrastructures for alternative fuels in the European Union”
New fuels or “biofuels”
The new fuels or “Biofuels” carry a diamond shape allowing them to be recognised very easily with their white colours with blue contours.
Being in perpetual development, their presence will be increasingly prominent in service stations in response to the demand of new consumers.
Update on…: State of the art of biofuels
In 2015 {13}, alternative fuels to petrol and fuel oil, constantly increasing, represented 7.1% of fuels consumed compared to 6.7% in 2014.
A change that is intended to be reassuring
Change is gradual, since 12 October new labels are emerging, however older ones do not will not disappear.
